With the growing age, people start facing issues with loneliness and solitude. As people get busy in their lives, they do not get time to visit their elder parents or grandparents frequently. Elderly people are at higher risk of various health diseases like reduced vision, low energy, hearing aids, and many more which makes it difficult for them to go out alone and live by themselves. This might result in feelings of isolation and depression.

This quote from Dr. Cole is an eye opener-

“Loneliness acts as a fertilizer for other diseases,” Dr. Cole said. “The biology of loneliness can accelerate the buildup of plaque in arteries, help cancer cells grow and spread, and promote inflammation in the brain leading to Alzheimer’s disease. Loneliness promotes several different types of wear and tear on the body.” Loneliness and Social Isolation are not to be taken lightly. It may take a toll on an elder’s physical as well as mental health. So, it is necessary to take actions in order to save those who are at risk and provide them with the best senior care services. As a family member or social citizen, you can do your bit by talking with them. Here are few things you can do to make them feel good:

  • Sit with them and talk about their experiences and learnings from life, fun events and memories. Even talking for a few minutes a day will help them feel light.

  • Take them out to the place that they used to visit a lot when they were young.

  • Help them reunite with their whole family. Arrange visits or meetings with their friends and family or home caregivers.

  • Providing assistive gadgets for them, such as hearing aids, a magnifier, or a walker or cane, so that they can remain more involved and be a little independent.

  • If he or she is fond of pets, then give a pet and help them train, feed and walk the pets regularly. Having a pet is one of the best ways to overcome loneliness.

  • Make them familiar with the new major changes and inventions in recent years. Teach them about the new technologies which can be useful for them.

  • Hear out their problems.

  • Arrange and guide them about transportation facilities to visit stores, church, hospitals, etc. Also, help them order grocery and essential items through delivery services.

  • Or if you are unable to do any of these things, hire certified caregivers for them or go for senior home care services. Partner them with elderly assistance services or home caregiver professionals so that they are not left alone.
